Spells are expressions of magic available to all the original races of Yavaun, determined by their magical skill.
Magical skills[ | ]
Magical skill is simply a unit's ability to cast spells or create special items. Levels of magical ability determine the spell levels available to that unit for casting. Level three Magic skill, for instance, allows the caster to use any first, second, or third level spell. Magic skill, and therefore spell levels, can be advanced through extended training - but only if advanced spell research has been conducted (see the section which deals with Training on page 35 for more details).
The Obblinox can only reach the fourth level of Magic ability, while Eaggra, Shama'Li, and Tha'Roon can all attain Magic level six.
Humans, both Marines and Descendants, do not cast magic, but instead create special items using the Invention skill, which functions similarly. They can attain level six proficiency in this skill.
Each spell or special item drains the caster's Mana points, which regenerate slowly over time. See the Spells section that follows for a complete listing of the spells and inventions of the four factions and their descriptions.
Schools of magic[ | ]
Servants Under NagaRom[ | ]
Shama'Li[ | ]
Name | Level | Mana cost | Effect |
---|---|---|---|
Great Earth Spirit | Level 1 | 15
Mana points |
Caster
can target any unit which does not require Butanium up to four squares away. Targeted unit has +3 damage per hit, their attack is unhindered by armour, and it has one level of increased speed. In addition, the target unit is instantly healed twenty Life points. Multiple targets may be selected provided the caster has sufficient Mana. The effects of this spell last for two minutes. |
Soothing Voice | Level 2 | 25 Mana points | This spell only works on units who require Supplies. Target range is six squares. The targeted unit is pacified and cannot attack or cast spells. Multiple targets may be selected provided the caster has sufficient Mana. The duration is permanent or until the pacified unit is attacked by another unit. |
Ground Harvest | Level 3 | 70 Mana points | This spell creates a magic conduit into
the earth and extracts large amounts of Butanium for a short duration. The range of the spell is eight squares. Only a square in which Butanium is released is a valid target. A droid, unit, or structure on the target square does not hinder this spell. Ground Harvest can, for instance, steal Butanium from a square with an enemy Butanium Refinery. |
NagaRom's Touch | Level 4 | 40 Mana points | The target of this spell naturally regenerates
Life points at a much higher rate than normal. A target within three squares of the caster may be chosen, but the target unit must require Supplies. Multiple targets may be selected provided the caster has sufficient Mana. The regenerating ability lasts for five minutes. |
Wind Spirit | Level 5 | 85 Mana points | This spell instantly transports the caster
to a location of their choice, up to six squares away. The caster can cross any barrier, but cannot target an occupied square. Targeting water kills the caster. If the caster targets a vehicle, all units within the vehicle are displaced to the outside, and the caster becomes the new driver. In addition, this spell drains half of the caster's Life points. |
Implore for Help | Level 6 | 600 Mana points | A group spell requiring approximately
four units at full Mana points to cast. A random vehicle, creature, or hero appears. The new unit remains under the faction's control until it is killed. |
Eaggra[ | ]
Name | Level | Mana cost | Effect |
---|---|---|---|
Pathfinder | Level 1 | 15 Mana
points |
Allows a target
unit to manoeuvre unrestricted by movement modifiers, terrain, cybernetics, magic, etc. This spell can be cast at any target, including vehicles, up to five squares away. Multiple targets may be selected provided the caster has sufficient Mana. The effects of this spell last for three minutes. |
The Eye | Level 2 | 40 Mana points | The caster of this spell gains the ability
to detect mines and bombs. When the unit is within six squares of any such item, that item glows. The glow is only visible to the player who cast the spell. The duration of this magical perception is 90 seconds. |
Nature Seeing | Level 3 | 25 Mana points | This spell affects the entire play area.
For 25 seconds, you can see through the eyes of all the neutral animals on the map. |
Earth Form | Level 4 | 75 Mana points | Transforms the caster into a tree. The
concealed unit stays in that form for three minutes, or until it chooses to transform back to normal, or until it is attacked, or made the target of a spell. While in this form, the caster cannot perform any activity. The unit can see, regenerate (if possible), and regain Mana. |
Re-growth | Level 5 | 100 Mana points | Caster can target a building or vehicle
to restore it to full health. A group of approximately ten tree stumps may be targeted to yield healthy, normal trees. An open ground target causes shrubs to grow in a ten by ten square area. |
Resurrection | Level 6 | 300 Mana points | A group spell that every unit in the
group must know. So long as a target body is still on the map, this spell can bring it back from the dead. Life points and Mana points of a resurrected unit are full. However, the resurrected unit is stripped of all equipment, cybernetics, and extended training. |
Overlords[ | ]
Tha'Roon[ | ]
Name | Level | Mana cost | Effect |
---|---|---|---|
Darkened Mind | Level 1 | 15
Mana points |
This spell may target a unit up to eight squares away. The target has its sight range reduced to one square. Multiple targets may be selected provided the caster has sufficient Mana. The effects of this spell last for 60 seconds. |
Anti-Magic Force | Level 2 | 40 Mana
points |
This spell
removes all magical enchantments from an area. Targeting range is eight squares and the area of effect is four squares in all directions. Any prior spell affecting this area ceases to function. Therefore, summoned or magically controlled units become neutral, enchantments no longer bestow their effects, enchanted items become normal, etc. In addition, all magic-using units in the area of effect are drained to zero Mana. The spell is instantaneous, so new spells may be cast in the area afterward. |
Brain Blast | Level 3 | 20 Mana points | This spell only works on organic units
within six squares of the caster. The target sustains twenty points of damage, but the caster sustains ten points. Multiple targets may be selected provided the caster has sufficient Mana and life points. Armour does not reduce the damage inflicted by this spell. |
Cerebral Stun | Level 4 | 60 Mana points | Once this spell is cast, every unit within
five squares of the caster takes five points of damage and is stunned. Only organic targets are affected, and spin in a circle for the six second duration of their stun. Armour does not reduce the damage inflicted by this spell. |
Will the Weak | Level 5 | 20-90 Mana points | This spell can only affect neutral
beasts on the map. The Mana expenditure for this spell must be a mini- mum of twenty points, but can go up to 90 if the caster has that much. The Mana expenditure equals the chance of the spell's success. The range of this spell is one square. A successfully enchanted creature remains so for five minutes, after which time it reverts to neutral again. While it is enchanted, the creature comes under your control. If the spell fails, the targeted creature attacks the caster. Multiple targets may be selected provided the caster has sufficient Mana at least twenty points for each targeted creature. |
Worldly Sight | Level 6 | 350 Mana points | A group spell which every unit in the
group must know. For a duration of fifteen seconds the entire map is revealed to you, including all troop movements, creatures, and structures. |
Obblinox[ | ]
Name | Level | Mana cost | Effect |
---|---|---|---|
Brew Poison Potion | Level 1 | 20
Mana points |
When
this spell is activated, a poison potion appears in the caster's inventory. If the unit has the Bomb Planting skill, the potion may be thrown as far as the unit's range of attack. If the unit does not have Bomb Planting, the potion instantly explodes when used. Poison does 15-75 points of damage to the target square and half damage to surrounding squares. However, this potion affects organic units only. |
Brew Rage Potion | Level 2 | 15 Mana points | This spell creates a Rage Potion in the
caster's inventory. For the unit that quaffs this potion they receive the following bonuses: all damage doubles, +5 armour, speed and rate of fire increase by one level. The effects last for 15 seconds, then the unit dies. |
Brew Oil Bomb | Level 3 | 30 Mana points | When this spell is activated, an oil bomb
appears in the caster's inventory. If the unit has the Bomb Planting skill, the bomb may be thrown as far as the unit's range of attack. If the unit does not have Bomb Planting, the bomb instantly explodes when used. An Alchemist makes an oil bomb. When a unit uses it, a nearby area can be targeted and the potion explodes. All units in the radius of detonation take damage. |
Enchant an Item | Level 4 | 30-90 Mana points | This spell costs 30, 60, or 90 Mana,
depending on the number of non-magical items in the caster's inventory. All items in the hand slots are affected permanently, they are either changed to other objects or upgraded. Here are the effects of enchantment on each item.

Inventions[ | ]
- Humans on Yavaun use a kind of magic which is also
technological, creating special items with little or no materials. Each new item costs Mana points and Resources, and some also require Supplies or Butanium.
Name | Level | Mana cost | Effect |
---|---|---|---|
Rations and Utensils | Level 1 | 50 Mana
points, 50 Resource, 1 Supplies |
Units with this in their
hand slot subtract one from their Supplies consumption. If their consumption then equals zero, they neither count toward unit Supplies consumption, nor do they suffer hunger penalties. If a unit already requires zero Supplies, rations does not affect their consumption. |
Defoliant Bomb | Level 1 | 30 Mana points, 100
Resource |
This bomb is similar to other
explosives, but affects plant life only. It affects a roughly four by four area in which all trees, shrubs, and stumps are completely eliminated. In addition, Eaggra sustain two to ten poison damage from this bomb, regardless of the unit's armour. The defoliant bomb also inflicts five to thirty points of damage on farms and gardens. Note that even a unit without Bomb Planting ability may safely and effectively detonate a defoliant bomb, though they do not have the option to plant or lob it. |
Fog Device | Level 2 | 60 Mana points, 100 Resource | This device operates much
like a bomb, creating a darkness of ten squares in each direction. This darkness appears similar to unexplored areas on all auto-maps, except that of the player who used the device. The darkened area remains so until explored. |
Cryo Bomb | Level 2 | 40 Mana points, 200 Resource | This bomb acts like any
other bomb at the outset, damaging units in a three by three area of det- onation for two to ten points. In addition, the Cryo Bomb freezes any units in the blast area twice as long as a freeze ray. |
Work Tools | Level 3 | 100 Mana points, 150 Resource | If this item is in a unit's
inventory, they gain a Construction and Destruction skill increase of one. Note, however, that Work Tools do not provide a skill level to units that have no Construction or Destruction ability beforehand. |
Chemical Bomb | Level 3 | 70 Mana points, 300 Resource, 1 Butanium | A unit with
Bomb Planting ability is required to use a Chemical Bomb correctly. The bomb does a massive 10-100 points of damage to any unit in the three by three area of effect. |
Medical Kit | Level 4 | 70 Mana points, 250 Resource | This item can be carried
in a unit's inventory. Left-clicking on it instantly heals that unit for ten to forty Life points. After three uses, the kit disappears. |
Shield Armour | Level 5 | 70 Mana points, 750 Resource, 3 Butanium | Any unit
with this item in its inventory gains an armour increase of one. |
Teleportation Device | Level 6 | 100 Mana points. 250 Resource, 5 Butanium | This device
can instantly transport any unit who enters to a location of their choice, up to six squares away. A unit can cross any barrier with a teleportation device, but cannot target an occupied square. Teleportation into water kills the user. If a unit teleports into a vehicle, all units within the vehicle are displaced to the outside, and the teleporting unit becomes the new driver. In addition, teleportation drains half of the user's Life points. |
